Basic operation

Microsoft Excel has the basic features of all spreadsheets,^[4] using a grid of cells arranged in numbered rows and letter-named columns to organize data manipulations like arithmetic operations. It has a battery of supplied functions to answer statistical, engineering and financial needs. In addition, it can display data as line graphs, histograms and charts, and with a very limited three-dimensional graphical display. It allows sectioning of data to view its dependencies on various factors for different perspectives (using pivot tables and the scenario manager).^[5] It has a programming aspect, Visual Basic for Applications, allowing the user to employ a wide variety of numerical methods, for example, for solving differential equations of mathematical physics,^[6][7] and then reporting the results back to the spreadsheet. It also has a variety of interactive features allowing user interfaces that can completely hide the spreadsheet from the user, so the spreadsheet presents itself as a so-called application, or decision support system (DSS), via a custom-designed user interface, for example, a stock analyzer,^[8] or in general, as a design tool that asks the user questions and provides answers and reports.^[9][10][11] In a more elaborate realization, an Excel application can automatically poll external databases and measuring instruments using an update schedule,^[12] analyze the results, make a Wordreport or PowerPoint slide show, and e-mail these presentations on a regular basis to a list of participants.

Macro programming

VBA programming

Main article: Visual Basic for Applications

The Windows version of Excel supports programming through Microsoft's Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which is a dialect of Visual Basic. Programming with VBA allows spreadsheet manipulation that is awkward or impossible with standard spreadsheet techniques. Programmers may write code directly using the Visual Basic Editor (VBE), which includes a window for writing code, debugging code, and code module organization environment. The user can implement numerical methods as well as automating tasks such as formatting or data organization in VBA^[14] and guide the calculation using any desired intermediate results reported back to the spreadsheet.

VBA was removed from Mac Excel 2008, as the developers did not believe that a timely release would allow porting the VBA engine natively to Mac OS X. VBA was restored in the next version, Mac Excel 2011,^[15] although the build lacks support forActiveX objects, impacting some high level developer tools.^[16]

A common and easy way to generate VBA code is by using the Macro Recorder.^[17] The Macro Recorder records actions of the user and generates VBA code in the form of a macro. These actions can then be repeated automatically by running the macro. The macros can also be linked to different trigger types like keyboard shortcuts, a command button or a graphic. The actions in the macro can be executed from these trigger types or from the generic toolbar options. The VBA code of the macro can also be edited in the VBE. Certain features such as loop functions and screen prompts by their own properties, and some graphical display items, cannot be recorded, but must be entered into the VBA module directly by the programmer. Advanced users can employ user prompts to create an interactive program, or react to events such as sheets being loaded or changed.

Macro Recorded code may not be compatible between Excel versions. Some code that is used in Excel 2010 can not be used in Excel 2003. Making a Macro that changes the cell colors and making changes to other aspects of cells may not be backward compatible.

VBA code interacts with the spreadsheet through the Excel Object Model,^[18] a vocabulary identifying spreadsheet objects, and a set of supplied functions or methods that enable reading and writing to the spreadsheet and interaction with its users (for example, through custom toolbars or command bars and message boxes). User-created VBA subroutines execute these actions and operate like macros generated using the macro recorder, but are more flexible and efficient.

History

From its first version Excel supported end user programming of macros (automation of repetitive tasks) and user defined functions (extension of Excel's built-in function library). In early versions of Excel these programs were written in a macro language whose statements had formula syntax and resided in the cells of special purpose macro sheets (stored with file extension .XLM in Windows.) XLM was the default macro language for Excel through Excel 4.0.^[19] Beginning with version 5.0 Excel recorded macros in VBA by default but with version 5.0 XLM recording was still allowed as an option. After version 5.0 that option was discontinued. All versions of Excel, including Excel 2010 are capable of running an XLM macro, though Microsoft discourages their use.^[20]

Charts

Excel supports charts, graphs, or histograms generated from specified groups of cells. The generated graphic component can either be embedded within the current sheet, or added as a separate object.

These displays are dynamically updated if the content of cells change. For example, suppose that the important design requirements are displayed visually; then, in response to a user's change in trial values for parameters, the curves describing the design change shape, and their points of intersection shift, assisting the selection of the best design.

Versions of Excel up to 7.0 had a limitation in the size of their data sets of 16K (2¹⁴ = 16384) rows. Versions 8.0 through 11.0 could handle 64K (2¹⁶ = 65536) rows and 256 columns (2⁸ as label 'IV'). Version 12.0 can handle 1M (2²⁰ = 1048576) rows, and 16384 (2¹⁴ as label 'XFD') columns.^[21]

Microsoft Excel up until 2007 version used a proprietary binary file format called Excel Binary File Format (.XLS) as its primary format.^[23] Excel 2007 uses Office Open XML as its primary file format, an XML-based format that followed after a previous XML-based format called "XML Spreadsheet" ("XMLSS"), first introduced in Excel 2002.^[24]

Although supporting and encouraging the use of new XML-based formats as replacements, Excel 2007 remained backwards-compatible with the traditional, binary formats. In addition, most versions of Microsoft Excel can read CSV, DBF, SYLK, DIF, and other legacy formats. Support for some older file formats was removed in Excel 2007.^[25] The file formats were mainly from DOS-based programs.

Binary

OpenOffice.org has created documentation of the Excel format.^[26] Since then Microsoft made the Excel binary format specification available to freely download.^[27]

XML Spreadsheet

The XML Spreadsheet format introduced in Excel 2002^[24] is a simple, XML based format missing some more advanced features like storage of VBA macros. Though the intended file extension for this format is .xml, the program also correctly handles XML files with .xls extension. This feature is widely used by third-party applications (e.g. MySQLQuery Browser) to offer "export to Excel" capabilities without implementing binary file format. The following example will be correctly opened by Excel if saved either as Book1.xmlor Book1.xls:

Some thirteen years have passed but “Alpha Bravo Charlie” is still regarded as one of the most popular and celebrated plays of Pakistan Television (PTV). The series provided a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers and captivated audiences with its larger than life acting and script. This time, Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) has come up with a thrilling drama series based on the true stories of brave Pakistanis. Titled “Faseel-e-Jaan Se Aagay” (Invincible Spirits, Immortal Souls), the play is ISPR’s collaboration with CRS Public Relations, a private production company.

The series premiered in Lahore on Wednesday. A total of 11 episodes based on real-life stories of army personnel, policemen and civilians executing operations against terrorists and militants in the Mingora region. Promos of six stories were shared at the event while the remaining five will be released in April 2011.

“Faseel-e-Jaan Se Aagay” is a tribute to the immortals by the mortals, according to the drama’s executive producer Khawar Azhar.

“Matti Ka Qarz”, one of the six stories is based on the life of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Javaid Iqbal who wrote new chapters of gallantry in the violence hit Malakand Division. The brave officer stood firm in the face of life threats when police force in the area had lost morale and was abandoning the area. Iqbal embraced martyrdom, the terrorists even carried out a suicide attack on his funeral procession, killing 55 people including his young son. It is directed by Azeem Sajjad and written by Sajjad Saji and stars Noman Ejaz, Saba Qamar and Yasmeen Haq in lead roles.

“Meraj”, another story that is based on the life of Captain Meraj Muhammad who was martyred in Swat. He was the recipient of the Sword of Honour and had conducted several operations with Frontier Corps at Khyber Agency and Buner. The episode is directed by Shakil Adnan and written by Zafar Meraj. Captain Waqasur Rehman has played the lead role in “Meraj”.

“Inkaar” is based on 14-year old Raheem Gul who became a suicide bomber. He had to carry out a suicide attack at a mosque in DI Khan but changed his mind just 60 seconds before the execution time. It is written by Wasi Shah and directed by Kashif Nisar. It stars Leyla Zuberi and Mohammad Yasir in lead roles.

“Ada-e-Sarfaroshi” is about Hawaldar Naeem Asghar who facilitated Pakistan Army in having a secure access route till Bahrain town in the valley of Adeen, Mingora. He alone attacked the safe location of terrorists with grenades and embraced martyrdom. The story is scripted by Sajjad Saji and it is directed by Kashif Nisar. Kamran Mujahid and Sofia Mirza have played the lead roles.

“Ek Beti Ek Khanai”about is a 16-year-old girl, Momi Gul who was kidnapped and molested for two months in Mingora region by a terrorist. She was later forced into a marriage to a 72-year-old Afghan commander and was ultimately recovered by Pakistan Army. The story is written by Amir Raza and directed by Kashif Nisar. It stars Maria Khan, Farhat Abdullah and Zia Khan in the main roles.

“Ehd-e-Wafa” tells the story of childhood friends Lieutenant Atif Qayum and Lieutenant Zeeshan Khan who embraced martyrdom in an operation in Swat and North Waziristan, respectively. They studied together, got commissioned in army together and even death couldn’t part them. The story is written by Zafar Meraj and directed by Amir Yousaf. It stars Captain Imran Khan, Firdous Jamal and Nirvaan Nadeem.

PTV’s Managing Director Yousaf Beg Mirza said there were many stakeholders in the war against terrorism and media had largely played a positive role in it. He said that the stories would share the real lives of those who sacrificed their present for the future of the nation.

The drama series will air on PTV from January 14 every Friday at 7:40pm. Incorporating English subtitles to enhance the scope of the play.

Accounts of supernatural occurrences have always been common in the print media. The 1705 pamphlet "A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs Veal" by Daniel Defoe is a well-known example. Local TV news programs in the UK and USA have featured ghost stories since the 1960s. Paranormal television arose from this tradition.

One of the earliest paranormal TV shows was In Search Of..., hosted by Leonard Nimoy which ran for six years from 1976. Rod Serling was originally slated to host the series, but he died in 1975. In Search Of... explored many paranormal topics, including UFOs, cryptozoological creatures (cryptids), lost civilizations, and other mysteries. Though the subject matter gradually lost popularity, the show gave way to future TV series following the same genre.

Ghostwatch, a fictional news broadcast about a haunted house in the UK that aired in 1992, created controversy when a majority of viewers believed the televised show was real.

Discovery Channel started to explore the genre with some success from 1996. The Fox Broadcasting Company had a news-style oriented show, Sightings, that was hosted byTim White and this show lasted for six years. MTV's Fear premiered in 2000, establishing the visual look and editing style followed by most paranormal reality television show. In 2002, the British satellite channel Living TV launched the ghost-hunting series Most Haunted. Its success helped spawn other shows on the channel, including Dead Famous andJane Goldman Investigates, and the channel developed a distinctive identity based on paranormal programming. The production company responsible for these programs, Antix, also produced two series of Spook School which followed the investigators of Para-Projects as they teach members of the public how to become paranormal investigators themselves

Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system developed and released by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was officially unveiled in September 2014 following a brief demo at Build 2014. The first version of the operating system entered a public beta testing process in October 2014, leading up to its consumer release on July 29, 2015.^[4]

Windows 10 introduces what Microsoft described as "universal apps"; expanding on Metro-style apps, these apps can be designed to run across multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical code‍—‌including PCs, tablets, smartphones,embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface Hub and Windows Holographic. The Windows user interface was revised to handle transitions between a mouse-oriented interface and a touchscreen-optimized interface based on available input devices‍—‌particularly on 2-in-1 PCs; both interfaces include an updated Start menu which incorporates elements of Windows 7's traditional Start menu with the tiles of Windows 8. The first release of Windows 10 also introduces a virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View, the Microsoft Edge web browser, support for fingerprint and face recognition login, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 to improve the operating system's graphics capabilities for games.

Microsoft described Windows 10 as an "operating system as a service" that would receive ongoing updates to its features and functionality, augmented with the ability for enterprise environments to receive non-critical updates at a slower pace, or use long-term support milestones that will only receive critical updates, such as security patches, over their five-year lifespan of mainstream support. Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group, argued that the goal of this model was to reduce fragmentation across the Windows platform, as Microsoft aimed to have Windows 10 installed on at least one billion devices in the two to three years following its release.^[5]

Windows 10 received mostly positive reviews upon its original release in July 2015; critics praised Microsoft's decision to downplay user-interface mechanics introduced by Windows 8 (including the full screen apps and Start screen) in non-touch environments to provide a desktop-oriented interface in line with previous versions of Windows, although Windows 10's touch-oriented user interface mode was panned for containing regressions upon the touch-oriented interface of Windows 8. Critics also praised the improvements to Windows 10's bundled software over 8.1, Xbox Live integration, as well as the functionality and capabilities of Cortana personal assistant and the replacement of Internet Explorer with Microsoft Edge.

Critics characterized the initial release of Windows 10 in July 2015 as being rushed, citing the incomplete state of some of the operating system's bundled software (such as the Edge web browser), as well as the stability of the operating system itself on launch.^[6][7][8] Windows 10 was also criticized for limiting how users can control its operation, including limited controls over the installation of updates on the main consumer-oriented edition in comparison to previous versions. Privacy concerns were also voiced by critics and advocates, as the operating system's default settings and certain features require the transmission of user data to Microsoft or its partners. Microsoft has also received criticism for how it has distributed Windows 10 to users of existing versions of Windows, which has included the automatic downloads of installation files to computers, the recurring display of pop-ups advertising the upgrade, and the installation process being scheduled or initiated automatically without expressed user consent

Foods similar to pizza have been made since the neolithic age. Records of people adding other ingredients to bread to make it more flavorful can be found throughout ancient history. In Sardinia, French and Italian archaeologists have found bread baked over 7,000 years ago. According to Professor Philippe Marinval, the local islanders leavened this bread.[4] The Ancient Greeks had a flat bread called plakous (πλακοῦς, gen. πλακοῦντος - plakountos)[5] which was flavored with toppings like herbs, onion, and garlic. In the 6th century BC, the soldiers in Persian King Darius I armies baked flatbreads with cheese and dates on top of their battle shields.[6][7] Some commentators have suggested that the origins of modern pizza can be traced to pizzarelle, which were kosher for Passover cookies eaten by Roman Jews after returning from the synagogue on that holiday, though some also trace its origins to other Italian paschal breads.[8] Abba Eban has suggested that modern pizza "was first made more than 2000 years ago when Roman soldiers added cheese and olive oil to matzah".[9] Other examples of flatbreads that survive to this day from the ancient Mediterranean world are focaccia (which may date back as far as the ancient Etruscans), coca (which has sweet and savory varieties) from Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, the Greek Pita, Lepinja in the Balkans, or Piadina in the Romagna part of Emilia-Romagna in Italy.[10] Foods similar to flatbreads in other parts of the world include Chinese Bing_(bread) (a wheat flour-based Chinese food with a flattened or disk-like shape), the Indian Paratha (in which fat is incorporated), the Central and South Asian Naan (leavened) and Roti (unleavened), the Sardinian Carasau, Spianata, Guttiau, Pistoccu and Finnish Rieska. Also worth note is that throughout Europe there are many similar pies based on the idea of covering flat pastry with cheese, meat, vegetables and seasoning such as the Alsatian Flammkuchen, German Zwiebelkuchen, and French Quiche. In 16th century Naples, a Galette flatbread was referred to as a pizza.[11] Known as the dish for poor people, it was sold in the street and was not considered a kitchen recipe for a long time.[12] This was later replaced by oil, tomatoes (after Europeans came into contact with the Americas) or fish. In 1843, Alexandre Dumas, père, described the diversity of pizza toppings.[13] An often recounted story holds that on 11 June 1889, to honour the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, the Neapolitan pizzamaker Raffaele Esposito created the "Pizza Margherita", a pizza garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, to represent the national colours of Italy as on the Italian flag.[14][15][16] Pizza is now a type of bread and tomato dish, often served with cheese. However, until the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, the dish was sweet, not savory, and earlier versions which were savory more resembled the flat breads now known as schiacciata.[17] Pellegrino Artusi's classic early twentieth century cookbook, La Scienza in cucina e l'Arte di mangiar bene gives three recipes for pizza, all of which are sweet.[18] However, by 1927, Ada Boni's collection of regional cooking includes a recipe using tomatoes and mozzarella
